"The Scholarly Wolf"
(after D.A. Mackenzie)
Before you listen make sure that you know these words:

scarce - not very much of something;
to act fairly to others - поступать справедливо по отношению к кому-либо;
in vain - напрасно;
a scholar - грамотей, учeный;
a stable - конюшня;
the shoe on the horse's hoof- подкова на копыте лошади;


FIRST LISTENING
Listen to the story "The Scholarly Wolf" and find out whether these sentences are TRUE or FALSE:

1. The Wolf was a scholar and he was very proud of this fact.
2. The Fox had never been educated like the Wolf.
3. The Fox asked the farmer for a bite because he was very polite.
4. The Wolf wasn't strong enough to open the stable door.
5. The Wolf and the Fox saw several cows standing near the wall.
6. The Wolf seized the hare and didn't want to share it with the Fox.
7. The Fox asked the Wolf to read the maker's name because he couldn't tell who made that horse-shoe which shone so brightly.
8. The Fox outwitted the Wolf because he was much cleverer.


SECOND LISTENING
Listen to the story again and answer the questions:

1. Why were the Fox and the Wolf so hungry?
2. What did the Fox suggest that they should do?
3. Why couldn't the Fox get the hare himself?
4. Did the Wolf act generously when he managed to get the hare?
5. Did the Fox show he was angry or disappointed when the Wolf decided to take the whole of the hare to himself?
6. Did the Fox give up the idea of getting the hare to himself? How did the Fox act?
